American teachers organ donation saves three lives

The family of a female American teacher, who collapsed during a class at her school in Uijeongbu last week, has donated some of her organs to save three Koreans.

According to the Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Tuesday, 52-year-old Linda R. Freel, a teacher at the International Christian School in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, and wife of school director Rex Freel, donated her liver, kidneys, corneas and skin tissue, after she passed away Saturday.

This is the first case for a Westerner donating their organs to Koreans, according to the hospital.

``While 35 patients among 1 million donate their organs in the United States, only five out of 1 million donate in Korea. Freel’s organ donation will be an opportunity to share her noble philosophy in sharing life,’’ said Yang Cheol-woo, director of the organ transplantation department at the hospital.

Freel collapsed last Thursday during a class and was sent to the Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital and was pronounced brain dead. A day later, her husband decided to proceed with the organ donation, something she has been considering when she was alive.

On the day Freel made his decision, his wife was sent to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital for the operation. The transplant immediately took place, with two patients suffering from kidney disease each receiving a kidney and another receiving her liver. Her corneas were given to two patients on Monday, and skin tissue is to be used on those who suffer from severe burns.

According to the hospital, organ transplants can be done regardless of race, as long as the tissues match one another. It also explained that because people tend to hesitate when it comes to finalizing the transplant process, it becomes difficult to actually use the organs at the right time, but thanks to Freel’s quick decision, they were able to make the best use of the organs.

The Freels first came to Korea 14 years ago and have been working for the International Christian School while also doing missionary work to help students.

미국인 장기기증으로 한국인 3명 새 삶！

한국에 살다가 뇌사상태에 처한 미국인 여성이 자신의 각막과 간, 신장 등의 장기를 기증해 3명의 한국인 환자들이 새 삶을 얻은 사실이 알려지며 큰 감동을 주고 있다.

서울성모병원은 25일 경기도 의정부의 국제크리스찬외국인학교 교사로 재직 중이던 미국인 린다 프릴씨의 이 같은 숭고한 희생에 대해 밝혔다.

프릴씨는 지난 20일 수업 중 갑작스런 뇌출혈로 쓰러져 의정부성모병원으로 옮겨졌지만 뇌사 진단을 받았고 국제크리스찬외국인학교장이자 남편인 렉스 프릴씨는 21일 고인의 평소 뜻에 따라 장기기증 의사를 밝힌 것이다.

국내에서 뇌사 상태의 서양인이 장기를 기증한 것은 이번이 처음이라고 한다.

국내 뇌사자 장기기증의 경우 장기기증 동의과정에서 의사결정이 늦어져 간혹 기증이 어려운 사례가 발생하는 반면 프릴씨 부부의 이번 결정은 매우 시의 적절했다는 게 의료진의 설명이다.

프릴씨 부부는 14년 전 한국에 와서 국제크리스찬외국인학교 교사로 재직하며 학생교육과 선교사업에 힘써왔다.

린다 프릴씨는 21일 서울성모병원으로 이송돼 이날 오전 12시부터 22일 새벽 4시까지 장기적출과 이식을 통해 간(1)과 신장(2), 각막(2)과 골 조직, 피부 등의 인체조직을 기증하고 22일 새벽 2시1분에 영면했다.

기증된 고인의 장기는 적출 즉시 만성신장질환을 가진 2명에게 신장이, 간질환을 가진 환자 1명에게 간이 각각 이식됐다.

이어 각막은 24일 2명의 환자에게 이식됐으며 기증된 조직은 향후 화상 등의 질병으로 고통 받고 있는 사람들에게 이식될 예정이다.

서울성모병원 장기이식센터장 양철우 교수는 “미국의 경우 100만명당 35명의 장기기증이 이뤄지는 반면 우리나라는 100만명당 5명에 불과해 장기기증자가 턱없이 부족하다”며 “린다 프릴씨의 장기기증이 국적을 뛰어넘은 생명 나눔의 숭고한 정신을 널리 알리는데 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

린다프릴씨의 빈소는 의정부성모병원 영안실(8호)에 마련됐으며 조문은 25일 오전 12시부터 오후 9시까지 진행된다.
