US military unable to explain mystery missile launch

Listen

The U.S. military have admitted that they cannot explain what appears to be a large missile launch off the Californian coast in the Pacific Ocean, the Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

The Pentagon contacted the Navy, the Air Force and the Missile Defense Agency after the apparent launch north of Catalina Island and west of Los Angeles on Monday evening local time but none said it knew what had happened, according to the report.

The object, described by senior ex-military officials as "pretty big," left a long dense condensation trail, or contrail, and flew in a northwesterly direction, it said.

Speculation has included that it was a submarine-based intercontinental ballistic missile launch to show military strength to Asia; a ship-based launch of an interceptor missile; part of a laser missile defense testing program; or the work of talented amateurs, the report said.
