A chic North Korean girl has been spotted using a cellphone in a Pyongyang park.

The photo that a Russian tourist took at Moran Park in downtown Pyongyang in August has been disclosed on the Radio Free Asia (RFA) website via Curtis Melvin of the United States.

In the photo, the girl wears black garment of refined design and patterns.

The girl also wears glasses with pink frames and a necklace, and is holding another cellphone in her right hand. She has a watch around her left wrist, a badge on her chest, and has a blue fan.

On the cellphone is written “Pyongyang” in Korean, along with “koryolink,” the name of the wireless phone service provider. Several functions of the cellphone are seen in Korean along with the English alphabet.

Melvin is reported to have said that the costume does not seem to be one typically seen in Pyongyang.

He said the girl seemed up to date in fashion, with the phone, garment and accessories.

Meanwhile, Egyptian mobile phone service provider, Orascom Telecom, revealed that there are some 185,000 North Koreans using cellphone via koryolink.

It is believed that young people, including teenagers, as well as ranking government and party officials and foreigners use cellphones in North Korea, with subscriptions rising sharply these days.



휴대전화 사용하는 '세련된 평양 소녀'

평양시내 공원에서 휴대전화를 사용하는 북한 소녀의 모습이 공개돼 눈길을 끌고 있다.

지난달 북한을 방문한 러시아인이 평양시내 모란 공원에서 촬영해 미국의 북한 위성사진 전문가인 커티스 멜빈 씨를 통해 자유아시아방송에 공개된 이 사진에서 소녀는 비록 검은색의 옷을 입었지만 상의의 모양과 무늬가 세련돼 보인다.

또 이 소녀는 분홍색 안경테와 빨간색의 작은 손가방으로 한껏 멋을 냈고, 양손에는 휴대전화를 하나씩 들고 손에 찬 손목시계와 목걸이, 파란색 부채, 가슴에 단 휘장도 달고 있다.

이 소녀가 들고 있는 휴대전화에는 '평양'이라는 명칭과 함께 휴대전화 서비스를 제공하는 '고려링크(koryolink)' 회사의 이름도 표시돼 있으며, 휴대전화의 사용 기능에는 '차림표', '통보문', '절환' 등 북한식 표현이 쓰였지만 숫자판에 영어 알파벳이 쓰여져 있다.

10일 자유아시아방송(RFA)에 사진을 제공한 북한 위성사진 전문가인 커티스 멜빈씨는 "평양에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 전형적인 옷차림은 아닌 것 같다"고 말했다.

그는 "휴대전화를 사용하는 모습과 옷차림, 액세서리 등이 전혀 유행에 뒤떨어지지 않는다"면서 "과거 북한 여성의 옷차림과 비교하면 최근 뚜렷한 변화를 느낄 수 있다"고 설명했다.

한편, 이집트의 이동통신 회사인 '오라스콤 텔레콤'은 최근 북한 내 휴대전화 사업체인 '고려링크'를 통해 휴대전화를 사용하는 북한 주민이 지난 6월 30일을 기준으로 약 18만 5천 명에 이른다고 밝혔다.

'오라스콤 텔레콤'은 특히 북한의 고위 관리와 외국인뿐만 아니라 10대 청소년과 젊은이들도 휴대전화를 사용하고 있다며 휴대전화 가입률이 빠르게 증가하고 있다고 전했다.
