A 1933 recording by late Korean dancer Choi Seung-hee (1911-1969) has been discovered, Yonhap News Agency said Thursday.
Soongsil University professor Bae Myeong-jin analyzed a recording featuring a jazzy version of a Korean folk song ``Doraji taryeong'' by an artist named Choi Seung hee, and confirmed it as being the voice of the modern dancer, according to Cheong Moon-kyo, president of Synnara Records. The song was recorded August 1933 at Taepyeong Records.
``A graduate of Sookmyung Women's University, Choi Seung-hee had initially pursued a career as a vocalist,'' said Cheong. ``We now know that Choi had made recordings at Taepyeong Records and Girin Records under her name before making her 1936 album `Garden of Italy' at Columbia Records Japan.''
Choi is recognized as one of the world's finest performers from the first half of the 20th century. She has also taught as a professor at a performing arts university in China, 1951-1952.
