Tension in Persian Gulf
Dear editor,
According to media reports, a fisherman was killed and three others were wounded when a U.S. navy ship fired at their small boat in the Persian Gulf. According to U.S. officials, the American ship verbally warned the smaller boat when it was several meters away and also fired warning shots before the real shooting. But people on the small boat claim that no prior warning was received before shots were fired at them, which killed one fisherman and wounded three others. India has demanded an immediate investigation into the incident after the killing of one of its nationals. Tension is high in the Persian Gulf after new sanctions imposed by the European Union on Iran. Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil supply route, and continues to perform military exercises to close the vital oil shipping route. The U.S. State Department already warned that the U.S. will resist any efforts if Iran tries to close the oil supply route. Now the presence of U.S. warships in the region, the purposed missile defense shield program in the region and shooting incidents like this could further spoil the situation. At a time when things are already going from bad to worse after the war in Syria and several European countries are facing their worst financial crises, new war adventures in the region could bring further disaster for the already ill world economy.
