Korea and Japan Can Work Together

Dear editor,

I have just returned to Bangkok from my first trip to Korea. I was tremendously impressed with everything I saw and did (and ate). Korea is a vital, energetic and exciting place, and I am excited to return in the near future.

While there, I thought often of the rising power and influence of China. As with any country or region, it seems that it is better for all concerned that there be a balance, so that no single country comes to dominate trade or diplomacy.

It struck me that Korea and Japan could, working together, be a wonderful, strong influence in Asia ― a balance to China. I know that there are many historical reasons for Korea and Japan not to cooperate closely, but a future in which the two helped to lead Asia together could hold great promise.

Both Korea and Japan would benefit, but it could also be of benefit for other Asian nations as they aspire to the success achieved in your respective countries.
