A district court has ruled in favor of singer and actor Kim Hyun-joong, 30, who has been embroiled in allegations that he caused his former girlfriend to have a miscarriage by physically assaulting her.
The Seoul Central District Court Wednesday rejected a compensation request from the woman, surnamed Choi, 32, who had demanded Kim pay 1.6 billion won ($1.4 million) in compensation for emotional distress caused by the miscarriage.
Rather, the court ordered her to pay Kim 100 million won in compensation for defaming the former member of idol group SS501.
The court said Choi falsely accused Kim of violence during a televised interview by claiming his physical abuse resulted in her miscarriage.
"Choi failed to provide evidence that Kim demanded she get an abortion and that she miscarried due to his violence," the court said in its ruling. "Despite the lack of evidence, she had the interview and defamed Kim."
The dispute began in August 2014 when Choi filed a complaint against Kim to claim his culpability in her miscarriage. She dropped the suit after receiving 600 million won from Kim in exchange for not making their stories public.
However, in February 2015, Choi claimed she was pregnant with Kim's baby again, and filed another suit two months later demanding 1.6 billion won.
In response, Kim countersued her demanding that she return the 600 million won for breach of the earlier agreement and pay another 600 million won in compensation.
Kim claimed that there was no evidence that Choi was really pregnant at the time of the alleged violence and miscarriage.
Last September, Choi had a baby boy, who was confirmed to be Kim's son by DNA analysis.
