The Seoul Metropolitan Government will open five major cultural facilities by 2020 with a budget of 3.6 trillion won, in an effort to make cultural assets more accessible to citizens and to stimulate the city's cultural industry, the city said Tuesday.
They include a concert hall to house the city's orchestra near Gwanghwamun, a handcraft museum in Anguk-dong, Seoul Donhwamun Traditional Theater near Changdeok Palace, a film museum in Chungmuro and a multi-concert hall complex in Chang-dong.
The traditional theater, scheduled for September, will be the first to open.
"We are working to make cultural assets available to more city residents," a city official said. "Also, we want the culture industry to attract tourists."
Along with laying out the infrastructure, the city will also push to include city heritage sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They include the remains of Baekje (18 B.C. ― 660 A.D.), one of the three ancient Korean kingdoms which had its capital in Seoul, as well as several Confucian shrines, including the nation's top Confucian academy Sungkyunkwan which was relocated to Seoul in 1398 following the foundation of Joseon (1392-1910).
