A foreign woman in Korea received a suspended jail sentence for having an abortion, court said Thursday.
The woman, 26, whose identity was withheld, was accused of having the abortion when she was two months pregnant, on July 27, 2012. The verdict hearing in Chuncheon District Court was delayed because the woman did not attend her trial for long.
The woman was sentenced to four months' jail, suspended for a year.
"Abortion is a grave crime which infringes on an embryo's right to life," said presiding Judge Song Seung-hoon. "Considering various factors of the case, including the reason for the abortion, the sentence was made."
