A South Korean company has developed chips that ensure GPS systems on planes and ships keep operating in the face of jamming attempts.

Telace said its products made GPS systems jamming-free by using signals from U.S., Russian and Chinese satellites ― a departure from the conventional GPS technology that has relied solely on U.S. satellites.

This reliance on U.S. signals left the GPS systems of nearly 1,700 planes and 700 ships here paralyzed for six days last month when North Korea targeted signals from U.S. satellites.

“The newly developed chip can receive an individual signal or all three signals at the same time,” said a Telace researcher. “Because it receives more signals from satellites it is expected to improve accuracy and safety.”

Following the jamming attack by the North, the South Korean government decided to bolster GPS safety. The government also wants international cooperation to prevent similar provocations.
