With North Jeolla Province's Office of Education taking the lead, four provincial education offices are set to publish supplementary history textbooks.
The move comes amid the government's decision to author history textbooks for secondary schools. Supplementary textbooks are commonly used at schools to aid the understanding of certain matters.
The education offices of Gangwon Province, South Chungcheong Province and Gwangju City are taking part.
Those of Busan and South Gyeongsang Province are reportedly reviewing the plan favorably while the education offices of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province have decided to make their own supplements.
Issuing such material is a measure to avoid going against the law by publishing other textbooks when the state-authored textbooks are introduced. But conflict is expected over the supplements as the government has pledged to take a strong stance against all alternative learning aids.
The North Jeolla Province Office of Education will organize a task force with representatives from the four offices. It will decide on what the supplementary textbooks will cover and will select authors by the end of next month. The team will aim for a textbook development committee to be launched early next year and to have the book completed by the end of the year.
