But a U.N. spokesperson said Ban does not have plans to visit North Korea next week.
The Chinese news agency cited its source as Pyongyang's Korean Central News Agency.
It posted on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, that the North's state agency notified a Xinhua reporter of the news.
On Monday, Yonhap News reported on the U.N. chief's plans to visit the North, but details of when remain to be confirmed.
It would be Ban's first visit to the North and the third by a U.N. secretary general.
Attention is being drawn to whether he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, especially because the U.N. chief is from South Korea.
Ban is leaving Saturday for the East Asia Summit that begins Sunday in Kuala Lumpur.
