The sole presidential candidate for the Student Council of Seoul National University (SNU) came out as a lesbian during her campus campaign.
Running in the school's 58th student presidential election, Kim Bo-mi announced her sexual orientation during her speech Wednesday and said she wants her school to be a place in which no one has to live with discrimination under certain labels.
Since April, the 23-year-old has served as vice president with the current president, Joo Moo-yeol, but recently resigned from her post to run for president. She is currently running unopposed.
"The fact that I am a lesbian is just another piece of who I am," said Kim. "The goals I have accomplished as vice president and will achieve as president will not change. We are fellow students in the same boat despite our differences in sexual orientation."
Kim's campaign slogan is "moving as one toward diversity."
Kim is majoring in Consumer and Child Studies. The election is scheduled to take place over four days starting Nov. 16. The SNU Student Council bylaws state that voter turnout must exceed 50 percent for the election to be valid.
