Despite the economic recession and falling purchasing power, consumers are finding ways to treat themselves, with small but premium products from overseas becoming increasingly popular.
"These days, you see people waiting in queues in supermarkets and department stores to buy foods from foreign brands, such as bread or popcorn, to cater to their tastes," said FIJI Water said.
FIJI Water, a premium bottled water, is sourced from the fountainhead of Viti Levu in Fiji (Viti Levu) island. The product has gained the biggest market share in the U.S. bottled water market.
With its fancy packaging, FIJI Water is famous for coming from an ancient aquifer on the island. And the sealed production system makes FIJI water free from human contact until the cap is unscrewed.
Another popular luxury is Garrett Popcorn, a rather pricey product from Chicago. It instantly flew off selves when it arrived in Korea last August. And it has spawned a string of similar popcorn ranges.
Garrett Popcorn is available in seven flavors and the signature ones include Chicago Mix, Caramel Crisp, Cheesecorn, Mild Salt and Plain. The brand is sold in nine countries, including Singapore and Hong Kong.
Mon Chou Chou, the Japanese brand behind the popular Dojima roll, has created a buzz among sweets lovers since it launched in 2013, in Osaka, Japan. Mon Chou Chou offers cream-filled, soft sponge cakes and other sweets made from milk produced in Hokkaido.
