Japan consumes the least rice among Asian countries, according to a Tokyo-based travel website.

TripAdvisor JP on Sunday released data showing how much rice each Asian country consumes per day.

An individual Japanese consumes about 119 grams of rice every day, leaving the country at bottom of the poll of 50 surveyed countries.

Bangladesh was first, with each person consuming 479 grams of rice each day. Laos and Cambodia followed closely.

Korea ranked 15th, with each person consuming an average of 234 grams of rice a day.

“Korean people have long eaten rice as a staple food, but the nation’s eating pattern has changed a lot,” said a Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs official. “There are plenty of substitute foods, so people no longer eat just rice.”

According to Statistics Korea, rice consumption has declined gradually over the past decade.

In 2005, each Korean consumed 243 grams of rice a day. By 2014, this had fallen to 206 grams.
