Lee Jun-seok, the captain of the Sewol ferry, received a life sentence in prison after a murder charge against him was upheld in an appeal verdict Tuesday morning.
Gwangju High Court annulled a 36-year jail sentence previously handed down by the city's district court, and sentenced Lee to life imprisonment during an appeal hearing for 15 of the Sewol crew and the ferry operator Cheonghaejin Marine, which was indicted for oil spills that occurred during the sinking.
The court sentenced the other 14 crew members to prison terms ranging from one and a half to 12 years. Three crew members were cleared of murder charges.
The Chief Mate was sentenced to 12 years and the second mate, seven years. The Chief Engineer surnamed Park will serve 10 years in jail.
In the first trial, he was found guilty of murdering members of the crew and sentenced to 30 years in prison, and Cheonghaejin Marine was fined 10 million won.
The prosecution initially sought the death penalty for Lee and life imprisonment for Park and two others, and 15 to 30 years in prison for the other 11 defendants.
