Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin
A ruling Saenuri Party lawmaker raised in Monday’s interpellation session the possibility of assassinating the North Korean leader in the south’s usurping the northern military, reports said Tuesday.
Rep. Song Yong-keun, during his questioning of Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin, quoted a paper noting North Korea will likely strike a revolution with the assassination of Kim Jong-un.
Song added to the question whether South Korean military force can advance to the North given such an initiative is prohibited by the Charter of the United Nations.
Kim responded the North Korea case may be applied to the Charter in a different angle. The minister pointed out that both countries’ military integration will be inevitable.
Rep. Song also questioned Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae regarding whether the unification will take place on the basis of one side absorbing the other.
As to Ryoo’s response that the government wants “peaceful unification,” Song retorted whether it’ll be “peaceful unification” or “absorption unification” depends on North Korea’s turbulent political environment that could lead to unavoidable catastrophes.
Voices came from the main opposition Democratic Party as well, who weren’t so optimistic about unification by military engagement.
Rep. Kim Sung-gon said it will only cause cracks in both countries, suggesting to establish a new committee dedicated to preparing for an unification era.
Rep. Moon Byung-ho even raised an option of sending their party leader Kim Han-gil to the north and holding a referendum with Kim Jong-un.
Rep. Shim Jae-kwon criticized President Park Geun-hye for her speech at the Davos Forum where she only focused on positive outcomes of a unification, arguing her “unification is a bonanza” promotion has no reasonable ground.
