IFAD chief due in Seoul next week

The head of a U.N. agency working to help develop rural areas worldwide will visit South Korea next week to discuss ways to boost bilateral partnerships.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) said Wednesday Kanayo Nwanze will travel to the country, recognized for rapid transformation from an impoverished agricultural society to an industrial power, from Aug. 26-28.

"In order to create a world free of hunger and poverty we need to be bold and operate on the cutting edge of innovation," Nwanze said before his departure for South Korea, according to an emailed press release. "The Republic of Korea, after the ravages of war, transformed itself from a recipient of assistance to a significant donor, which shows their extraordinary commitment to development that has been underpinned by invention and innovation."

Nwanze plans to meet with South Korean Agriculture Minister Lee Dong-phil and other officials on "extending the impact of combined efforts to increase knowledge sharing and information technologies in rural areas in developing countries across Asia," the IFAD said. The officials include Kim Yong-hwan, chairman of Korea Eximbank, and Kim Young-mok, president of the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

The IFAD, headquartered in Rome, apparently hopes to reach out to North Korea, but U.N. sanctions on the communist nations make it difficult to find efficient ways to help people there.

The IFAD is a specialized agency of the U.N., established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. (Yonhap)
