What's with the girls' group in North Korea?
One of the centerpieces of the introduction of the Kim Jong-un regime in North Korea was the Moran Traditional Dance Troupe. The performance that it put on on July 6 was like nothing other. Some of the performers, apparently in their teens, were wearing kill heels, colorful stage gear that showed a lot of their cleavage. It was not unlike a performance by one of the idol group from South Korea or Great Britain. And they danced to the song “My Way” by the legendary Frank Sinatra. Experts said the performance was a stark departure from those of the past and is seen as one of the measures taken to highlight the introduction of Kim Jong-un as the new leader. The performance included dances to the main tunes of “Snow White” and “Mickey Mouse” as well as “Gonna Fly Now” from the movie “Rocky.” It was attended by all senior members of the North Korean elite and the military and was reported in the Chinese and Japanese press. After the initial flamboyant performance, the dancers went back to business as usual, dressed in military uniform and other conventional attires. |
