Seoul City started to demolish the Sewoon Shopping Mall in Jongno, which was the modernization icon of the city in the 1960s. In its place the city plans to set up a green plaza with a number of trees in the area.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government Wednesday held a groundbreaking ceremony and started to pull down Hyundai Arcade of the shopping mall as the first step.
The city government will build a green zone measuring 70 meters in length and 50 meters wide in a total area of 3,000 square meters. Following this project, the city will build another two green plazas; one measuring 90 meters in length and 290 meters wide by 2012 and the other one measuring 90 meters in length and 500 meters wide by 2015.
Oh Se-hoon, the city mayor said ``The green plaza project will be the highlight of city renovation plans and it will help the city boost its competitiveness.''
