Korea's Cabinet approved Tuesday a revised bill to set up a sentencing commission for military tribunals as part of efforts to improve the credibility of their rulings.

The only sentencing commission currently affiliated with the Supreme Court does not cover rulings by military courts.

Under the revision, the government will establish a 15-member committee under the High Court for Armed Forces in charge of creating or revising detailed and objective guidelines for sentencing.

Military tribunals are also required to give detailed reasons for the determination of punishment in their verdicts, according to the revision.

"The sentencing commission for the military courts will reduce the possible gap of punishment among cases and boost public credibility in the ruling," a defense ministry official said. "The newly created one will work in close cooperation with the existing commission in devising standards."

The Cabinet also approved a revised regulation to allow military police and prosecutors to possess and use weapons such as guns in case the need arises while dealing with suspects or executing their official duties. (Yonhap)
