Woman keeps boyfriend’s corpse at home for two years

A 72-year-old woman has kept the body of her dead boyfriend on a chair in her southern Michigan house for about two years because she didn't want to be alone, according to news reports.

After Charles Zigler died at her house, his girlfriend Linda Chase kept his remains clean and dressed. She often talked to the body especially while she watched motor racing, as they did together when he was alive.

The autopsy results showed that the boyfriend died of natural causes at age 67. He was estimated to die around Christmas in 2010, the New York Daily News reported.

Police also revealed that she had cashed Zigler’s social security checks by forging his signature after he passed away.

Chase has not been arrested, but she will be punished for financial fraud. "I’m probably going to prison, but I didn't lie about that to police," she said.

“It’s not that I’m heartless. I didn't want to be alone. He was the only guy who was ever nice to me,” Chase said.

2년간 시신과 같이 산 70대 할머니 “외로워서…”

“남자친구를 보내면 너무 외로울 것 같았다!” 고독함이 두려웠던 70대 할머니가 사망한 남자친구의 시신과 줄곧 함께 생활한 것으로 알려져 충격을 주고 있다.

미국 미시간 남부에 살고 있는 72세 할머니 린다 체이스. 할머니의 엽기적 행각은 지금으로부터 약 2년 전 시작됐다.

절친한 남자친구였던 찰스 지글러(사진·사망 당시 67세)가 자신의 집을 방문했다가 숨을 거두자 할머니는 시신과의 동거를 시작했다.

체이스 할머니는 사망한 남자친구에게 깨끗한 옷을 입힌 뒤 의자에 앉혀놓고 평소 두 사람이 즐겨봤던 자동차경주대회를 함께 시청하는 등 엽기적인 생활을 했다.

충격적인 시신과의 동거는 행방이 묘연한 할아버지를 찾아달라는 가족의 신고를 받고 단서를 찾던 경찰에 의해 드러났다.

할머니는 들이닥친 경찰에 “잔인해서 한 짓이 아니라 그저 외로움을 느끼고 싶지 않았던 것 뿐”이라며 “찰스는 세상에서 유일하게 내게 다정다감했던 남자였다.”고 말했다. 할머니는 “찰스와 함께 TV를 보며 (시신에게) 말을 하기도 했다.”고 덧붙였다.

부검 결과 찰스 할아버지는 67세 나이로 할머니의 집에서 자연사한 것으로 나타났다. 사망시점은 2010년 크리스마스 전후로 추정됐다.

할머니는 아직 체포되지 않았지만 결국은 처벌을 받을 전망이다. 서명을 위조해 남자친구의 연금을 받은 것으로 드러났기 때문이다.

할머니는 “어쩌면 교도소에 갈지 모르지만 경찰에 진실을 털어놨다.”며 “외로운 나에게 찰스는 유일한 친구였다.”고 말했다.
