GMAT exercise 24

●Question 1. Sentence Correction

Direction: Correct the underlined part

As U.S. nuclear attack submarines prowl their familiar haunts deep within the oceans of the world these days, they increasingly are engaged in missions far different from the tasks for which they were built and for which their crews were trained over the last forty years.

A. they increasingly are engaged in missions far different from the tasks for which they were built
B. the missions they increasingly engage in are far different than the tasks they were built for
C. they engage increasingly in missions that differ significantly from the tasks they were built for
D. the missions they engage in are increasingly different than the tasks for which they were built
E. they increasingly engage in missions far different than the tasks for which they were built

●Question 2. Critical Reasoning

In the past the country of Siduria has relied heavily on imported oil. Siduria recently implemented a program to convert heating systems from oil to natural gas. Siduria already produces more natural gas each year than it burns, and oil production in Sidurian oil fields is increasing at a steady pace. If these trends in fuel production and usage continue, therefore, Sidurian reliance on foreign sources for fuel should decline soon.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. In Siduria the rate of fuel consumption is rising no more quickly than the rate of fuel production.
B. Domestic production of natural gas is rising faster than is domestic production of oil in Siduria.
C. No fuel other than natural gas is expected to be used as a replacement for oil in Siduria.
D. Buildings cannot be heated by solar energy rather than by oil or natural gas.
E. All new homes that are being built will have natural-gas-burning heating systems.

●Question 3. Data Sufficiency

Directions: In this problem, a question is followed by two statements containing certain data. You are to determine whether the data provided by the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the correct answer based upon the statement’s data and your knowledge of mathematics.

Is x>5?
1) (x-5)^2>0
2) x<5

A. statement 1 alone is sufficient, but statement 2 alone is not sufficient to answer the question
B. statement 2 alone is sufficient, but statement 1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question
C. both statements taken together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient
D. each statement alone is sufficient
E. statements 1 and 2 together are not sufficient, and additional data is needed to answer the question

●Question 4. Problem Solving

If the revenue of a company A is increased by 300% in this year, what is the ratio of the revenue in last year to that in this year?
A. 1:3 B. 1:4 C. 1:300 D. 1:400 E. 1:500

———————————————————————

●Answer to Q1: A
The answer choices B, D, and E are wrong because the adjective ‘different’ needs the preposition ‘from’ in terms of the idiom. And the relative clause out of the line is ideally parallel with the expression of the answer choice A rather than C. So, the answer is A.

●Answer to Q2: A
The statement pointed out in the beginning the rosy situation of fuel production and concluded that Sidurian reliance on foreign sources for fuel would decline shortly. To connect the premise and conclusion in the statement, it should depend on the assumption that there is now no change of fuel usage or that there would be decline of fuel usage in the country. In this context, while the answer choices B, C, D, and E are irrelevant in terms of showing the fuel consumption, the answer choice A is solely mentioning the fuel usage issue.

●Answer to Q3: B
Condition 1) Since x is not 5, x>5, yes but x<5, no, NOT sufficient, Condition 2) x<5 no, sufficient, therefore the best answer is B.

●Answer to Q4: B
A+300% —> A=4A, the ratio of the revenue in last year to that in this year is A:4A=1:4, the best answer is B.
