Acting National Assembly Speaker Chung Ui-hwa will visit Canada and the United States to expand parliamentary ties and meet with Korean residents in the two countries, official sources said Saturday.

The lawmaker will leave the country on Sunday for Canada where he is expected to meet with Senate Speaker Noel Kinsella and House of Commons head Andrew Scheer.

He will also visit a monument marking Canada's participation in the Korean War (1950-53).

The parliamentary leader is then scheduled to fly to the United States where he will give a lecture at the Korea Society and meet with Korean residents in the country. The lecture will touch on the unification of the Korean Peninsula and the possible role of the United States in the process.

Chung became acting speaker after Speaker Park Hee-tae was indicted in February for bribing a fellow ruling party lawmaker before being elected as party chairman in 2008. (Yonhap)
