Cultural Activities Spruce Up Asiana Working Conditions
By Kim Rahn Staff Reporter Well-performing companies pay greater attention to making workplace atmospheres cozier, healthier and even richer, with cultural activities. That's what Asiana Airlines seeks, for its employees, and, ultimately, higher productivity. The airline is operating various cultural and sports programs in the company compound to improve employee's mental and physical health. The carrier launched ``OZ's Cultural Trip'' in January, which has since become popular among workers. OZ is the flight code for Asiana. The cultural program is held every second and fourth Friday. Programs in recent months include a lecture titled ``Story on Opera and Musical'' jointly given by soprano Kim Won-jeong, who starred in the musical ``The Last Empress,'' and guitarist Seo Jeong-sil; a screening of the documentary film ``Old Partner;'' and commentary by music columnist Jeong Jun-ho about famous classical music. In May, the airline will hold a lecture on parenting, a concert performed by its workers, and a wine lecture given by a sommelier. Besides the OZ Cultural Trip, the carrier has provided various after work programs since 2002, with more than 1,000 employees participating per year. Yoga and swimming are two most popular programs, and other programs include hand acupuncture therapy, saxophone playing and sports dance. The airline company headquarters' remote location from downtown was part of the reason for the high demand for after work programs. The company is located at the western end of Seoul near Gimpo Airport. ``Due to the long distance from downtown Seoul and workers' homes, it's not easy for employees to take cultural lessons, workout, or enjoy other cultural activities after work. The programs meet their desire for such activities,'' an Asiana official said. In January, Asiana opened a fitness center at the company headquarters following workers' high interest in health. The 330-square-meter center is equipped with treadmills, bicycles and weight training equipment. The locker room, shower room and powder rooms offer sportswear and towels. A day spa is also available. rahnita@koreatimes.co.kr |
