By Alexander Ahn
A new high-speed ferry, named Queen Star, will have its maiden voyage between Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, and Jeju Island on May 17. According to the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Port Office, the ferry will be Korea’s fastest, biggest, and most comfortable passenger ferry to accommodate vacationers looking to enjoy a safe and convenient trip. “We are introducing the vessel traveling between Mokpo and Jeju Island for tourists to cut back travel hours. It is also designed with the best facilities and services as well as convenient departure times for our travelers,” said Lee Heuk-young, CEO of Sea World Express Ferry. The 5,360 ton, 113 meter-long ferry can carry 880 passengers and 200 motor vehicles at a time. It travels at 38 knots (70 kilometers) per hour and cuts the previous travel time of four hours and 50 minutes by two hours. The Queen Star will depart at 8 a.m. from Mokpo and at 12:30 p.m. from Jeju Island every day and will replace the Car Ferry Rainbow. The charge for an economy class seat is 48,150 won ($42); for an economy plus seat, 53,150 won ($46); for cars, 104,580 won ($91); and for cargo trucks (4.5 tons and heavier), 162,950 won ($142). Sea World Express Ferry is Korea’s largest luxury ferry, and transported 80 million passengers and 150,000 vehicles last year. |
