Gangnam Station most crowded in Korea

By Yun Suh-young

The most crowded of all bus and subway stations nationwide is Gangnam subway station.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Sunday that Gangnam Station reported over 120,000 people getting on or off there every day out of 92 stations surveyed nationwide.

Jamsil, Sadang, Seolleung, and Sillim subway stations ranked second to fifth respectively.

Of the bus stations, AK Plaza Station in Suwon ranked first with a daily average of over 63,000 disembarking and 77,000 commuters embarking, followed by Sadang Station and Express Bus Terminal. The most used means of public transportation in metropolitan cities was the bus with 63.3 percent whereas subways accounted for 36.7 percent.

For Seoul, subway usage was highest at 54.3 percent whereas Gyeonggi Province and Incheon had higher rates of bus use. This is attributed to Seoul’s more systematic and well-established subway system compared to other cities.

The satisfaction rate for the public transportation system increased slightly with 4.84 out of 7 points, up from 4.61 in 2006.

The users were mostly satisfied with the facilities and convenience of the system but answered negatively on the kindness of drivers.
