Woman in 70s commits suicide at Mt. Bonghwa
A woman in her 70s committed suicide Saturday by jumping off a cliff at Mt. Bonghwa in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, where former President Roh Moo-hyun killed himself in 2009, police said.
According to hikers, the woman, surnamed Lee, was sitting on Owl Rock on the mountain at around 7:50 a.m. They reported it to a policeman at a nearby station, but when officers arrived, she had already jumped off the cliff. She left no note, and an investigation is now under way to determine the motive, police said. Lee took a train from Seoul Station to Gimhae Friday, police said. Footage from surveillance cameras showed she was hiking on Mt. Bonghwa at around 6 a.m. the following day. Owl Rock is near Bongha Village, the hometown of the late former President Roh. Amid a widening prosecution investigation into a corruption scandal involving his aides, he leapt to his death there in May 2009. |
