Air Force develops risk management system for pilots

Listen

Security of Air Force pilots will be enhanced by a risk controlling system developed by the ROK Air Force. Officials said the system, called the “Korea Operation Risk Management (K-ORM),” has been applied to fighter squadrons since Feb 3.

The scheme enables Air Force officials to analyze pilot’s health condition in nine categories, including stress levels, health condition, sleeping hours, meals, alcohol level and mental states. The information inserted to the system’s database will rate the safety level of the pilot.

The Air Force explains that the pilot will be also analyzed in 22 categories of potential risks. Then, he will be classified into green, yellow and orange: normal flight, risk potential and management oversight and flight cancellation. The results are examined by manager before the flight.

If a pilot or his family members have a bad dream, he will be analyzed as mentally instable and get “flight cancellation.”

The Air Force expects the system to be useful in understanding the status of pilots and eliminating the risks to ensure a safe flight.

“The K-ORM system will be efficiently used because it can detect multiple risks and analyze the results into a database systematically.” Colonel Cho Byung-soo of the Korea Aerospace Risk Management Agency said. “We will seek to improve the system so that our pilots can complete their duties safely.”

The Air Force has developed the system for the past seven months, and applied it to KF-16 fighter squadron for the first time on Feb 1. The scheme will be further applied to F-15K, F-4, F-5 on Feb. 13.
