Police are investigating rumors of human trafficking for organ harvesting in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province.

According to police in Suncheon Saturday rumors have spread rapidly on Twitter that “three high school girls were kidnapped for human trafficking. One of them was killed and the remaining two are missing.”

Such rumors have been distributed by Internet users since early last month and revised versions of the allegations were posted on websites ceaselessly, a police officer said.

On some sites, an unidentified girl alleged she came close to being kidnapped for human trafficking but managed to escape.

In addition, rumors have been spread among students since early last month that the remains of girls, whose organs were extracted, were discovered at parks.

There have also been text messages asking people to be careful about a new kind of human trafficking in China.

An officer at the Suncheon Police Station denied the allegations about human trafficking. “No such cases of kidnapping have happened. Rumors regarding the remains of girls are groundless. People should not be swayed by these rumors.”

Police are investigating and will punish those responsible for the spread of such groundless rumors, the officer said
