North Korean leader Kim jong-il, who is known as a fan of South Korean dramas, has ordered actors and actresses in his country to watch South Korean dramas and learn something from them. Among a lot of Southern dramas, Kim cited “A Jewel in the Palace” as the first one to be made a benchmark.
He also reportedly praised the U.S. action film “Rambo,” dominated by the American heroism, although he has considered the U.S. as its irreconcilable enemy for a long time.
“You cannot say you have watched movies unless you have watched ‘A Jewel in the Palace’ or ‘Rambo,’” said Kim. The Open Radio for North Korea reported his remark, citing a person from a North Korean college on movie and play. The source said that Kim applauded two videos, lamenting that there are no actors and actresses who perform well as much as Korean or American movie stars in his country.
Kim reportedly said that there are many things to learn from content of Korean dramas or attitude of actors and actresses except its love triangle structure.
The North Korean governement has prevented normal people from watching South Korean dramas, entertainment shows and etc. Regarding this situation, Kim gently reminded its actors and actressesd of watching the contents secretly.
He also asked them not to forget to have critical view while watching the content. According to another source, elite groups such as college students in the North have complained about the law that bans them from having opportunities to watch South Korena dramas or shows.
Among comments are “We will watch them critically, so give us freedom to watch them” and “Why normal people have to be shot or expelled by force just because they watch South Korean dramas? It is unfair.”
