“We would rather leave our baby to die if he has to live disabled. That will be good for him,” the parents of a seriously ill baby said, refusing a surgery for the child.

Seoul National University Hospital has asked for an injunction against the parents hindering surgery for the baby, according to the Seoul Central District Court, Thursday.

The infant was born premature weighing 850 grams on July 8, and suffered a rupture intestine during cerebral hemorrhage surgery. However, the parents are refusing further surgery, allegedly worrying that it could lead to the child becoming disabled.

“The hospital claimed the surgery is necessary to save the infant’s life. The newly-born should be respected as a human being,” the hospital said in the injunction application. “The infant will die of peritonitis and blood poisoning if it is left without immediate surgery.”

The hearing is scheduled for July 22.

The hospital called for an early injunction with the date of surgery set as the baby urgently needs the operation.
