Asian women involved in prostitution at NK deluxe hotels

In the seemingly destitute lands of North Korea, Southeast Asian women have been involved in prostitution in deluxe hotel clubs in Pyongyang, the Seoul-based shortwave Open Radio for North Korea reported Saturday.

The broadcaster said that foreign women, especially those from Southeast Asian countries, are employed, instead of local women, to host and entertain the guests at basement bars of hotels.

“There are no officially registered adult entertainment establishments in North Korea. However, there are private establishments from luxury hotels with legal approval from the government,” an unnamed official of the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as telling the radio station. Women from China, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos along with North Korean women have been residing in these establishments, said the official.

According to the official, this prostitution business began with the construction of the Koryo Hotel in 1985. He also added that sector 5 of the ruling party is in charge of the selection of women. Sector 5 also drafts women who professionally served Kim Jong-il.

International businessmen and visitors would make North Korean women pregnant, resulting in an increasing number of mixed children. Orphanages would take in the children at an early age, and the mothers marked as social outcasts. These children are called “Ainok-jok” or “Honhyeol-jok” which means a child born between parents with different races, the report said.

To solve the rising numbers of the multi-cultural population in North Korea, the government started hiring more Chinese and Southeast Asian women. They are paid $200 to $500 a night and the money includes the stripping in front of foreign guests, it said.

“The government invites those who have invested large amounts of money in North Korea to these bars as a show of gratitude and in order to continue the relationship,” said another insider.

북한 고급호텔 지하에서 국가적으로 성매매 알선

북한이 고급 호텔 지하에 외국인 접대부를 두고 국가적으로 성매매를 알선한다고 대북 단파라디오 열린북한방송이 28일 보도했다. 처음에는 북한 여성들이 호텔 유흥업소에 고용되기도 했지만, 혼혈아 출산 등 사회문제가 계속되자 아예 동남아 여성들을 대거 고용해 유흥업을 한다는 것이다.

이 방송은 북한 외무성 관계자를 인용, “북한에는 공식적으로 유흥업소가 없지만 고려호텔과 양각도호텔 등 고급 호텔에서 비공개지만 법적으로 허가된 유흥업소가 있다”고 소개했다. 이곳에선 북한 여성들은 물론 중국과 필리핀, 미얀마, 라오스 출신의 여성들이 머물며 일을 하는 것으로 알려졌다.

이 관계자에 따르면 호텔 지하 유흥업은 1985년 고려호텔 완공과 함께 시작됐다. 호텔 유흥업소에서 근무하는 여성들은 기쁨조 등도 선발하는 중앙당 5과에서 선발했다.

유흥업소 개업 초기엔 호텔을 찾는 외국인들과 북한 여성들이 잠자리를 함께하고 임신하는 경우도 잦았던 것으로 알려졌다. 이에 피부색이 전혀 다른 아이들이 태어나 북한 전역에도 호텔 유흥업소 소문이 퍼지기 시작했다고 열린북한방송은 전했다. 혼혈아들은 주로 8세 미만의 고아를 양육하는 육아원에 보내졌고, 혼혈아를 낳은 여성들은 사회적으로 매장되는 경우도 흔했다.

북한 외무상 관계자는 “이런 이유로 북한에서도 피부색과 생김새가 전혀 다른 아이들을 지방 도시에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다”며 “북한에선 이런 사람들을 ‘아이노크’나 ‘혼혈족’으로 부른다”고 열린북한방송에 말했다.

혼혈아가 늘어나자 북한 당국은 중국과 동남아 여성들을 접대부로 대거 고용하기 시작했다. 이들 여성 접대부가 남성들과 잠자리를 하고 받는 대가는 미화 200-500달러 정도이며, 접대부에 대한 관리는 ‘대외문화연락위원회’와 ‘통일전선부’에서 맡는 것으로 알려졌다.

또 북한의 고급 호텔마다 있는 지하 바에선 외국인들에게 돈을 받고 여성들의 알몸을 보여주는 경우도 있다고 열린북한방송은 전했다.

북한 외무성 관계자는 “북한 당국이 투자를 많이 한 외국인에 특별 접대를 한다는 이유로 이러한 유흥업소에 데려가곤 한다”며 “외화벌이의 일환으로 이들을 유혹, 다시 북한에 돈을 투자하게 하려고 국가적으로 성매매를 알선하는 것”이라고 말했다.
