NK entertains guests by giving away drugs

A new custom of offering houseguests heroin, instead of alcohol, has popped up in North Korea.

This new trend started to appear last fall, reported Open Radio for North Korea, a South Korean radio station transmitting programs to the communist country, on Sunday. A source from North Hamgyeong Province said that a growing number of people are serving visitors drugs as a snack, according to the report.

Especially, in areas such as Cheongjin, the capital of the province, and the Musan region, it has become the proper etiquette to recommend drugs to close friends who visit there. Unlike alcohol, no other appetizers are needed when using drugs and it was easier to feel good, it said.

The broadcaster added that this phenomenon is not common in all households of the "hermit kingdom." However, another source claimed that “not only are drug used recreationally, but also to those who are not feeling well.” Based on this, the radio station said that a new social atmosphere where non-drug users are pushed into taking drugs have appeared.

According to a defector’s testimony, one of the best women’s hospitals in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, secretly gave heroin to patients who suffered pain from surgery.

The price of drugs in the North is known to be cheap. “Although prices vary depending on the quality, 1 gram costs about 20,000 won,” the source was quoted as saying.

"히로뽕 한 모금 빨려우" 마약 접대 풍속 생긴 북한

북한에서 손님이 집을 방문하면 술상 대신 마약을 권하는 새로운 풍속이 생겨났다.

북한전문매체 열린북한방송은 함경북도 무산 소식통의 말을 인용해 “작년 가을부터 북한주민들 사이에서 집에 손님이 오면 술상 대신 마약(히로뽕)을 권하는 새로운 풍조가 나타났다”고 1일 보도했다.

특히 청진이나 무산지방에서는 친한 손님이 오면 “한 모금 빨려우”라며 마약을 권하는 게 예의로 굳어졌다고 한다. 마약은 술과는 달리 안주가 필요 없고 술보다 더 좋은 기분을 느낄 수 있기 때문이다.

이 방송은 마약을 권하는 현상이 모든 집에서 통용되는 것은 아니라고 했다. 하지만 소식통은 “일부 주민들은 마약 복용을 기분전환을 위해서만이 아니라 몸이 좋지 않을 때 권유하기도 한다”고 했다. 열린북한방송은 이를 토대로 마약을 하는 사람뿐만 아니라 하지 않는 사람에게도 마약을 권하는 사회분위기가 만들어지고 있다고 전했다.

탈북자 최모씨의 증언에 따르면 북한 최고의 여성전문병원인 평양산원에서도 여성 생식기 수술 후 통증이 멎지 않는 환자들이 몰래 마약을 복용한다고 한다.

북한에서 마약의 가격은 비싸지 않은 것으로 알려졌다. 소식통은 “질에 따라 가격이 다르지만, 마약 가격은 1g당 중국 돈 130위안 정도(약 2만원) 한다”고 말했다.
