Embalmed body of Kim Il-sung becoming smaller

Rumors circulating among North Korean people have it that the embalmed body of North Korea’s founder Kim Il-sung is deteriorating , the Daily NK reported Friday. The communist North has sought to mummify Kim’s body for permanent preservation of the remains.

A North Korean defector said he visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, which was renovated and transformed into Kim’s final resting place, five or six times, when he lived in Pyongyang, and felt that Kim’s embalmed body is shrinking.

“My colleagues who visited the memorial palace with me shared a similar view, and we once talked about it quietly,” he said on condition of anonymity.

Another North Korean defector said he saw the body twice at an interval of a year and that it was certain that the body became smaller than before. “I talked about it with other officials who saw it with me, and they agreed with me.”

According to the NK Daily, North Koreans who studied in Russia said the embalmed body of Nikolai Lenin (1870-1924), a Marxist theoretician who worked as the first premier of the former Soviet Union, has been becoming smaller.

Some said that Lenin’s body has already became as small as that of an infant.

A Russian research center conducted works to permanently preserve Kim’s body as well as the body of Lenin.

According to Russian media, work to preserve Kim’s embalmed body cost $1 million at the initial stage, and preservation of the remains costs $800,000 a year. As a result, the North Korean regime has used $15 million for Kim’s remains since he died in 1994.

미라 처리된 김일성의 시신 크기가 줄어들고 있다?

대북전문매체 데일리NK는 수백억을 들여 미라 처리된 채 영구보관 중인 김일성 전 주석의 시신이 작아지고 있다는 소문이 북한 주민들 사이에 은밀히 퍼지고 있다고 15일 보도했다.

한 평양 출신 탈북자는 “평양 금수산기념궁전에 5-6차례 다녀왔는데 김일성이 줄어들고 있는 느낌을 받았다”고 밝혔다.

같이 다녀온 동료들도 같은 생각이어서 그런 이야기를 조용히 나눈 적도 있다”고 했다.

또 다른 탈북자도 “1년 간격으로 두 번을 봤는데 확실히 처음 봤을 때보다 크기가 줄어 있었다”면서 “함께 다녀온 간부들과 이야기해봤는데 역시 나와 같은 생각이었다”고 말했다.

데일리NK에 따르면 ‘김일성 미라 축소설’ 소문의 배후에는 러시아의 ‘레닌 미라 축소설’이 있다. 북한에서는 러시아인들과 러시아에 유학을 다녀온 사람들을 중심으로 “레닌의 미라가 작아지고 있다”는 소문이 퍼져 있다고 한다.

이 소문 중에는 심지어 레닌 미라가 갓난아기 크기 만큼 작아졌다는 이야기까지 있다.

레닌의 시신을 영구보존작업 한 기관은 러시아의 ‘생물구조연구센터’로 김일성의 시신 또한 이 기관에서 처리한 것으로 알려졌다.

러시아 매체들에 따르면 김일성 시신 영구보존 과정에 100만 달러(한화 약 11억원)가 소요됐으며 지속적인 관리비용으로 연간 80만 달러(약 8억 7000만원)가 사용되고 있다. 김일성 시신의 영구보존이 시작된 1994년부터 계산해보면 북한 당국은 17년간 총 1500만 달러(약 200억원)의 비용을 쏟아부은 셈이다.
