A tour bus with 43 people aboard drove off a mountainous road in Seongju-gun, North Gyeongsang Province, killing five passengers and its driver and injuring the remaining 37, police said Monday.
The death toll is feared to increase as some of the injured are in serious condition, the police added.
The accident took place when the bus skidded off a curved road that passes through a mountainous area in Sinpa-ri and smashed through the guardrail, falling 7 meters at around 5:40 p.m. Sunday.
The passengers, all members of a hiking club from Daejeon, were on their way back from a trip to Mt. Gaya in South Gyeongsang Province.
Police suspect the accident was caused due to a mechanical failure in the braking system. “One passenger said the driver shouted that the brakes are not working right before the accident,” a police officer said.
The police will investigate further into the accident to determine the exact cause.
