A recent NASA satellite photo showed a number of forest fires along North Korea's east coast, most notably around the newest missile launch facility in North Pyeongan Province, chosun.com reported Monday.
Clustered along the east coast, many of the fires were re-producing thick smoke, blanketing the East Sea with haze.
However, North Koreans are not afraid of these fires nor are they worried about the possible damages.
“This year, there are many reports of forest fires in North Korea. Residents here are waiting for it to stop spreading by itself. They are also criticizing those who are trying to put out the fires,” reported a radio broadcast.
According to the media, residents are happy about these fires because the land will be cleared for farming and firewood will be readily available to them.
“Many believe that these are gifts from above,” said the report, quoting sources there. “There are no available equipment to put out these fires in North Korea. Fire trucks are mostly used to save trees but most of these trucks are too old to work.”
This source also added that the residents do not really care about saving these trees and rather see them burn down.
북한에선 산불은 ‘하늘이 주신 선물’?
올해 건조한 날씨와 강풍으로 전국에서 예년보다 많은 산불이 발생하는 가운데, 북한에서도 산불이 잇따르는 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 북한 주민들은 산불을 ‘하늘이 주신 선물’이라고 여기는 것으로 전해져 궁금증을 낳고 있다고 조선일보 인터넷판이 18일 보도했다.
지난 15일 미 항공우주국(NASA)이 공개한 한반도 위성사진을 보면, 북한 동부 해안에서 산불로 추정되는 불기둥들을 관찰할 수 있다. 함경북도와 강원도 등 동해안을 따라 여러 곳에서 붉은 점이 보이고, 이곳에서 퍼져 나간 흰 연기가 동해를 뒤덮고 있다. 이 사진은 NASA가 중간해상도 영상분광계(MODIS)를 이용해 지난 13일 촬영한 것이다.
지 난 4일 고려대기환경연구소는 미국 해양대기청(NOAA)의 위성사진과 대기 온도 데이터 등을 분석한 결과, 지난 2일 북한 지역 청학(아오지)•어대진•철산•영광•고성•금강 등의 대기 온도가 비정상적으로 높아져 산불이 여러 곳에서 발생한 것으로 보인다고 발표했었다. 개간 목적의 방화일 수 있다는 분석도 있다.
북한 주민들은 정작 산불을 반기는 것으로 알려졌다. 대북 단파라디오 자유북한방송은 산불이 나면 고사리가 나고 농사 지을 땅과 땔감이 생기기 때문에 북한 주민들은 산불을 ‘하늘이 주신 선물’로 생각하며 즐거워하고 있다고 최근 보도했다.
이 방송은 양강도와 함경북도 소식통들의 말을 인용, “올해는 북한에서 산불이 많이 일어나고 있는데, 주민들은 마치 산불을 기다렸다는 듯, 불이 저절로 꺼질 때까지 기다린다. 오히려 불을 끄려 하는 사람들을 비난하거나 저지하기도 한다”고 전했다.
