A former local government official’s suicide note has stirred controversy as he claimed in the note that during questioning by prosecutors, he was slapped three times.

The 54-year-old official at the Gyeongsan City administration in North Gyeongsang Province, only identified by his family name Kim, was found to have hanged himself Monday. His death triggered speculation that prosecutors may have committed violence against him during questioning.

In his 20-page suicide note, Kim alleged that “during questioning, investigators hurled insults at me and slapped me in the face three times. They also hit me in the chest.”

Kim said the prosecution threatened to ask for 10 years of imprisonment or more during trial, if he refused to answer questions “properly.”

He complained that “prosecutors did believe others. They did not believe me and put me on the list of suspects for interrogation.”

Kim insisted that there were insulting, and committed violence and blackmail against him.

However, Kim did not name the investigators who allegedly used violence against him during questioning.

The bereaved family is considering making public the suicide note after a funeral service for Kim in order to uncover the truth of the case, sources at the prosecution said.

Ahn Sang-don, a senior prosecutor at the Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office, said he did not think that investigators committed atrocities against Kim during questioning.

“But we are investigating whether Kim’s remarks are based on the facts or not, since he made such allegations,” Ahn said.

Early this month, prosecutors sought an arrest warrant for Kim for his alleged role in a bribery-for-promotion scandal. Kim hanged himself at Gyeongsan Stadium.
