Radioactive substances may hit Korea Wed.

Concern is rising in Korea over nuclear safety as reports have been spreading on Internet portals that radioactive substances leaked from the damaged Fukushima reactors in northeastern Japan will arrive in the country in the middle of this week.

The Norwegian Institute for Air Research reported Sunday that cesium-137 and other radioactive materials leaked from the crippled reactors will reach the southern part of the country around 9 a.m. Wednesday and cover the entire Korean Peninsula around 9 a.m. the next day.

Radioactive substances will reach the Korean Peninsula three or four days after leakage from the stricken Fukushima plant, and levels of radioactivity are expected to be higher than ever detected here.

So far, minuscule traces of radioactivity have been detected in South Korea. They are believed to have arrived here via the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Arctic and Siberia.

Those reports on radioactive substances reaching the Korean Peninsula are spreading through portals and twitters. Accompanied by images, an article posted on a major portal says, “Winds containing cesium will arrive in the Korean Peninsula on April 6.”

However, an official at the Korea Meteorological Administration said that “the prediction is that winds, in a change of direction, might blow from Japan to the Korean Peninsula. But changes of winds blowing like that are very slim.”

The Norwegian institute concurs. The results of a study based on a simulation and limited information are those which are very unclear, it said on its website, describing the study as a scenario based on a possible worst situation.

6-7일 ‘세슘’이 한반도 뒤덮는다?

국내 주요 포털 등에 외국 연구소가 분석한 일본 후쿠시마 원전에서 나온 방사성물질의 한반도 직접 상륙설이 유포되면서 ‘방사능 불안’을 야기하고 있다.

3일 노르웨이 대기연구소가 자체 분석 프로그램을 통해 예측한 바에 따르면 후쿠시마 원전에서 나온 세슘(Cs-137) 등이 6일 오전 9시쯤 한반도 남쪽 지방에 도달해 7일 오전 9시쯤 한반도 전역을 뒤덮는다.

방사성물질은 후쿠오카에서 3-4일 만에 바로 한반도에 상륙하고 농도는 지금껏 관측된 것보다 훨씬 짙어질 것으로 예상됐다.

현재까지 한반도에서 방사성물질은 캄카차 반도와 북극, 시베리아를 2주 정도 돌아 와 극미량만 검출됐다.

이 같은 예측 결과는 주요 포털과 트위터 등을 통해 널리 퍼지고 있다. 주요 포털에는 ‘4월6일 한반도에 세슘 등이 포함된 바람이 상륙한다’라는 글과 영상과 함께 올라왔다.

이에 대해 기상청 관계자는 “NILU 예측엔 방사성물질이 남풍을 타다 남서풍으로 바뀌면서 한반도에 오는 것으로 돼 있으나, 편서풍이 주로 부는 우리나라 특성상 현실성이 매우 낮다”고 말했다.

노르웨이 대기연구소도 홈페이지에서 “시뮬레이션 결과는 제한된 정보에 따른 매우 불확실한 것”이라면서 “최악의 경우를 상정한 시나리오”라고 밝혔다.
