A total of 18,624 stray animals were rescued and sent to shelters in Seoul last year, up 10 percent from the previous year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Friday.
Dogs accounted for the largest portion at 11,120, followed by cats numbering 7,092, the city government said.
Only 2,077 pets were returned to their owners, 6,165 were adopted by new owners, 3,911 died of natural causes or diseases, and 6,471 were put down after a failure to locate their original or new owners within 10 days, the maximum time allowed for them to remain in shelters.
The city government rescues stray animals and sends them to designated shelters, which post their information on the website www.animal.go.kr for original owners or new ones.
