Rampant false rumors concerning the series of explosions at nuclear reactors in the quake-hit Japan have prompted an irrational buying-frenzy for certain items.

Shoppers have been purchasing more bottled drinking water, instant noodles and other easy-to-cook food items at discount stores across the country since Thursday when a rumor that started circulating on the Internet said the rain forecast for the weekend could contain radioactive material from Japan.

Messages have been posted on Naver and other web portals, claiming that the radiation contains hydrochloric acid, potassium cyanide and other harmful chemicals and they will have a negative impact.

“It is too bad for fishermen. But seafood caught in the East Sea for the next 20-30 years should not be consumed,” read a posting on Naver.

However, the Korea Meteorological Administration refuted such a claim, saying Korea is not susceptible to the radiation leak in Japan because the west-bound winds will keep radioactive material from spreading to the Korean Peninsula.

Shoppers are also going on a buying-frenzy for sea mustard and other foods that include iodine, following the rumor that the chemical can protect humans from radiation. Iodine tablets, which keep radioactive iodine from being taken up by the thyroid gland, have also been a hot item on unfounded claims that the pills can prevent people from being contaminated with radioactivity.

But the Korea Food and Drug Administration dismissed such rumors, saying sea mustard and other iodine-containing foods cannot cure those exposed to radiation because they are extremely low in content. The agency also said iodine tablets should be consumed immediately before and after exposure to radiation to be effective, stressing taking the pills in advance will not do anything.

Additionally, parents with newborns have been busy surfing online shopping sites over the past few days in search of diapers manufactured in Japan. They are all out to buy ones that were made and imported before Japan’s nuclear disaster due to the wide spreading rumors that diapers produced after the nuclear explosions would be contaminated with radioactive materials.

But Japanese diaper importers and distributers have been notifying consumers that most diapers imported from Japan are manufactured in factories located as far as 1,000 kilometers away from the Fukushima nuclear power plants, stressing the newly-produced diapers are radiation-free and safe to use.

On Tuesday, a false rumor that Korea might be vulnerable to the spread of radiation from Japan in the afternoon that day due to shifts in wind spread rapidly through cell phone text messages and Twitter, creating a panic among those extremely fearful of the nuclear fallout.

The message said, “The wind has begun to blow toward the Korean Peninsula. Stay indoors for 24 hours and close all windows. If it rains, don’t expose yourself to it. Tell your friends about this. It is said the materials may hit Korea as early as 4 p.m.

The police immediately launched an investigation and on Thursday, a 28-year-old salaried worker, identified only by his surname Byeon, was taken into custody on charges of spreading the false rumor.

A police officer at the National Police Agency’s Cyber Terror Response said Byeon will be charged with violating the information protection law.



일본 원전 괴소문에 내국인들도 패닉 상태

일본 원자력발전소의 방사능 물질과 관련된 괴소문이 확산되면서 이를 자제해야 된다는 목소리가 높아지고 있다.

이번 주말에 내리는 비에 방사성 물질들이 포함되어있다는 괴소문이 돌면서 전국 할인점들에 비상에 걸렸다. 많은 사람들이 많은 양의 물, 라면과 즉석 식품을 사기 위해 할인점에 몰려들었다.

한국원자력안전기술원 관계자는 “우리나라는 중국쪽 고기압 영향으로 북서풍이 불고 있어 전혀 영향이 없다”며 “일본에서 동풍이 불어도 한번도 북서쪽에서 내려오는 찬 공기에 밀려 한국까지 힘을 미치지 못하고 또 일본에서 방사능 물질이 한국에 넘어 올 정도로 높이 올라가면 늘 서풍이 강하게 분다”고 설명했다.

시민들은 또한 요오드가 들어간 식품들을 산다고 야단들이었는데 이는 요오드가 방사성 물질에 노출되는 것을 예방할 수 있다는 소문에 비롯됐다.

그러나 식약청은 이러한 루머들은 거짓이라고 말했다. 요오드가 첨가된 음식에는 요오드의 양이 매우 적어서 효과가 없다며 약품들은 노출되었을 경우에만 섭취해야 된다고 당부했다. 또한 미리 먹으면 효과가 없다고 밝혔다.

신생아가 있는 부모들은 인터넷상으로 일본에서 만드는 기저귀들을 사기 위해 사투를 벌여야 했다. 그들은 모두 원전 사태가 있기 전에 만들어진 기저귀들을 구입하려 했는데 이는 사태 이후에 만들어진 것들에는 방사성 물질이 포함 되었다는 루머 때문이었다.

그러나 일본 기저귀 수입업체들은 모든 기저귀들은 많게는 1,000km 떨어진 공장에서 만들어져 안전하다고 당부했다.

지난 15일 근거 없는 유언비어가 휴대전화 문자와 소셜네트워크서비스를 통해 급속도로 유포됨에 따라 시민들의 공포심이 확산되고 있다.

“일본 원전 폭발로 바람이 (15일) 오후 4시경 한국에 올 수 있습니다. 비가 온다면 절데 맞지 마세요. 주변에도 전달해 주세요. 목과 피부도 최대한 드러내지 마세요”라는 내용을 담고 있다.

이 같은 내용의 허위 메시지가 급속도로 확산되자 경찰이 유언비어를 반복적으로 퍼트린 최초 유포자를 추적하였다. 17일 괴소문을 유포했다는 혐의로 변모씨(28)를 검거했다.
