The Seoul Metropolitan City Government Sunday said it will adopt a Russian Polar bear couple from its sister city, Moscow.
The adoption is the result of a request made by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin during a meeting on Thursday. The Moscow mayor visited Seoul for three days last week to learn firsthand about Seoul’s success in dealing with traffic jams.
“Currently, only five Polar bears live in three zoos in the country, and they are so old that they may soon die. But it’s been a challenge to bring the endangered species here as most countries ban taking Polar bears out of their own countries,” an official from the city government said.
The Seoul Zoo in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province will be the new home for the polar bear couple and they are expected to be popular among visitors, he added.
