Korean workers in Libya evacuate after intrusion

About 70 South Korean construction workers in Libya had to evacuate after angry local residents broke into their work site and dorms apparently in protest of the government's housing policy, the foreign ministry said Saturday.

About 200 local residents forced their way into a South Korean construction site in Derna in eastern Libya at around midnight Thursday (local time) and then stormed into a nearby dormitory on Friday night, according to their company in Seoul.

After the intrusion, about 70 Korean workers evacuated to a nearby Muslim school, company officials said.

"Anticipating that the residents would soon break into the dorms, we tried to block the entrance with various equipment," one of the workers in Libya told Yonhap News Agency by phone. "We had no other option but to flee."

No one was believed hurt, but the company has yet to assess the extent of property damage, company officials said.

A similar incident at the same work site last month resulted in millions of dollars of property damage.

"As far as we know, there was no clash between the local people and Koreans," a ministry official in Seoul said. "We have asked the local police to protect (them)."

The South Korean company involved, whose name was not made public, said it is negotiating with the Libyan government on compensation and other matters through diplomatic channels.

"We are monitoring the current situation, but we have not made any special protection measures or withdrawal plan," a company official said, asking not to be identified. (Yonhap)

한국인 70여명 인근 학교 긴급 대피..신변 불안

국내 건설사의 리비아 공사 현장을 점거한 현지 주민들이 한국인 근로자 숙소까지 침입해 직원들이 긴급 대피한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

19일 해외건설업계와 외교통상부에 따르면 지난 17일 새벽(현지시각) 리비아 데르나의 주택 공사 현장에 난입한 현지 주민들이 18일 밤에는 현장으로부터 100m가량 떨어진 한국인 근로자의 숙소에 기습적으로 들이닥쳤다.

아직 정확한 피해 상황은 알려지지 않았지만, 다행히 인명 피해는 없는 것으로 파악되고 있다.

70여명의 한국인 직원들은 공사 현장과 가까운 이슬람 사원에 붙어 있는 학교로 일단 대피 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

현지의 한 근로자는 연합뉴스와의 전화 통화에서 "현장을 점거한 주민들이 숙소에도 곧 들이닥칠 것으로 예상하고 장비를 동원해 출입구를 막으려 했으나 워낙 많이 몰려와 어쩔 수 없이 몸을 피했다"며 "노트북, 카메라 등 귀중품은 리비아 현지 직원의 집에 미리 옮겨놓았다"라고 말했다.

공사 현장에 나타나는 리비아 현지 주민들의 숫자는 낮에는 50명 정도에 불과하다가 밤에는 300여명 규모로 불어나는 것으로 전해졌다.
