Mt. Baekdu erupts in 2016: Kim Jong-il

“Mt. Baekdu will erupt in 2016,” North Korean leader Kim Jong-il said.

Kim explained workers of a mine in the town of Musan, North Hamgyeong Province, about the mountain’s probable eruption in 2016, calling for production of iron ore as soon as possible, according to a civil human rights group against North Korea.

Due to the eruption, Kim added that “Residents living within a given area from the mountain will have to be evacuated.”

The majority of this town have come to believe the mountain’s probable eruption following the remark of Kim. However, it is not known on what ground Kim has made such a remark.

Last October, professors Yoon Sung-hyo and Lee Jung-hyun of Pusan National University reported in their joint paper that Mt. Baekdu has showed signs of volcanic activity. They also warned that the scale will possibly be 10 times greater than that of Iceland’s volcano which erupted last year.

The National Science and Technology Council, a top policymaking body on science and technology headed by President Lee Myung-bak, reported on Dec. 27 that seven government agencies, including the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Environment Ministry, have jointly launched to monitor, prediction and develop technology against the probable volcanic eruption.

김정일 "백두산 2016년 폭발할 것"

북한의 김정일 위원장이 "백두산이 2016년쯤 폭발할 것이다"라고 말했다.

대북인권단체인 `성공적인 통일을 만들어가는 사람들`은 지난해 12월 초 김정일 위원장이 무산군을 방문했을 때 무산광산 종업원들에게 "백두산이 폭발할 것이다…… 그 시점은 2016년 정도일 것이고, 백두산으로부터 일정반경 이내의 주민주택들은 철거할 것이다. 그래서 철광생산을 빨리 많이 해야 한다"라는 말을 했다고 주장했다.

또 무산지역의 거의 모든 사람들은 김 위원장의 이 말이 있은 후 백두산 폭발설을 믿고 있다고 한다. 하지만 김 위원장이 어떤 근거로 이런 발언을 했는지는 알려지지 않았다.

지난해 10월 부산대 윤성효 교수와 이정현 교수는 백두산의 분화 징후가 뚜렷하고 그 규모는 아이슬란드 화산 폭발의 10배 정도 클 것이라며 백두산 폭발 가능성을 경고하는 논문을 발표한 바 있다.

한편 우리 정부는 백두산 화산 폭발에 대한 우려가 커지자 정부 부처가 공동으로 폭발에 대한 감시와 예측, 대응을 위한 연구에 나섰다.

국가과학기술위원회는 교육과학기술부, 환경부, 국토해양부, 행정안전부, 통일부, 기상청, 소방방재청 등 7개 부처가 백두산 화산 폭발시기에 대한 과학적인 예측과 함께 이에 대한 대응기술 개발에 나선다고 지난해 12월 27일 밝힌 바 있다.
