A baby Malayan Sun Bear that escaped from its cage in a zoo on the outskirts of Seoul on Dec. 6 was captured Wednesday after having eluded police officers and zoo staffers for nine days.
Seoul Zoo said its search team climbed Mt. Cheonggye at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning to check traps. At around 8:30 a.m., the team found the 6-year-old male bear caught inside one of the traps.
The bear, nicknamed “kkoma,” meaning a little boy in Korean, appears to be healthy, officials said.
The zoo had installed seven traps containing honey, wine and fish — the favorite food of the missing black bear — in the areas surrounding all the peaks of the mountain range.
“The bear appears to be in good shape. We think he was lured into a trap by food and was then locked inside the moment he stepped in. The animal was immediately given an anesthetic to calm it down,” a Seoul Zoo official said.
But in the process, zoo staffers faced difficulty in anesthetizing the bear as the drug was initially frozen, due to low temperatures, the official said.
“The animal was then transferred to a veterinary hospital at the zoo by a military vehicle for a medical checkup. The bear will be moved to a cage if he has no health problems,” he said.
Over the past nine days, the bear was spotted several times by police helicopters at the top of the mountain, but police officers and zoo staff failed to catch him.
On Monday morning, a food cart selling instant noodles, snacks and beverages to mountain climbers at the top of the mountain was found to have been damaged, apparently by the runaway bear.
Police at first banned people from entering the mountain area immediately after the bear’s escape. But on Dec. 10, climbers were allowed entry to the mountains. Since Monday, a 30-member search team had been combing the mountains, with a team of four zoo staff to catch the bear.
달아난지 9일만에 생포된 서울대공원 곰
지난 6일 서울 근교 동물원을 달아난 말레지아산 어린 ‘선베어’ 곰이 9일 동안 경찰과 동물원 사육사를 용케 피해 다니다 수요일 붙잡혔다.
서울대공원내 서울동물원측은 수색팀이 미리놓은 덫을 확인해보기 위해 이날 오전 5시 청계산에 올라갔다고 밝혔다. 8시 30분 경 이 수색팀은 6살 짜리 이 수컷 곰이 덫 한 개에 갇혀있는 것을 발견했다.
당국자는 한국말로 조그만 소년이라는 뜻의 “꼬마”라는 별명을 가진 이 곰은 건강해 보인다고 말했다.
동물원측은 달아난 흑곰이 좋아하는 식품인 꿀과 포도주 그리고 물고기를 넣어둔 덫 7개를 산속에 설치해놓았다.
동물원의 한 관계자는 “이 곰은 상태가 좋은 것 같다. 먹을 것에 유인돼 덫에 발을 들여 놓자마자
갇힌 것 같다”며 “날뛰지 못하게 하기 위해 즉시 마취제를 투여했다”고 전했다.
이 관계자는 그러나 이 과정에서 기온이 낮아 처음 마취제가 어는 바람에 사육사들이 곰을 마취하는데 어려움을 겪었다고 밝혔다.
이 관계자는 “이 곰은 그런 다음 건강을 체크를 위해 군용차로 동물원 가축병원으로 이송됐다”며 “
건강에 문제가 없으면 이 곰은 다시 우리로 이동하게 된다”고 말했다.
지난 9일 동안 이 곰은 수 차례에 걸쳐 상 정상에서 경찰 헬기에서 목격됐으나 경찰과 사육사들이 생포하지를 못했다.
월요일 아침 달아난 이 곰의 소행으로 음식 카트가 산 정상에 망가져있는 것이 발견되었다. 이 음식 카트는 등산객들에게 라면과 스낵 그리고 음료를 손수레이다.
처음에 경찰은 곰이 달아난 직후 사람들의 입산을 금지했다. 그러나 지난 금요일 등산객들의 입사을 다시 허용했다. 월요일부터는 30명으로 된 수색조가 산을 이잡듯 훑었으며 4명의 사육사 팀이 붙잡았다.
