A train carrying gifts to celebrate the birthday of North Korean heir Kim Jong-un appears to have been sabotaged by opponents of the Stalinist regime, a radio station that broadcasts news into the North reported Monday.

Open Radio for North Korea, citing a North Korean intelligence official, said a cargo train containing gifts to celebrate the occasion was derailed Dec. 11 on the way from the northern border town of Sinuiju to Pyongyang.

“The railways here are outdated. But the tracks looked so badly damaged that it appeared they had been tampered with before the train was about to pass,” the official was quoted as saying.

According to the source, eight of the train’s 40 cars derailed. They contained gifts such as watches and televisions to be given to officials on Kim’s birthday, which is believed to fall on Jan. 8.

The birthday will be Jong-un’s first since being selected as the country’s heir in September, when he was elevated to four-star general status and a high party post. Kim, thought to be no older than 28, is the youngest son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

It was speculated that the gifts were intended to curry favors for the heir.

Analysts say he still needs to consolidate his power among the country’s top brass before taking the mantle of leader. They expect he will take on further military roles in the coming year to cement his power among the political elite.

Good Friends, a Seoul-based group with sources in the North, said in a newsletter last week that Jan. 8 has been declared a national holiday. But a North Korean calendar acquired by a local daily earlier this month showed the date had yet to be declared as such.

Activist groups with lines into the North have said that some citizens in the North are skeptical of the succession process due to the younger Kim’s age and inexperience.
