71-year-old homeless lady reads English daily

A homeless old lady wandering around the center of Seoul has been attracting the attention of netizens, especially since she has been found to be college graduate and to have served at the foreign ministry.

Gwon Ha-ja, 71, who is single, earned the name “McDonald Grandma” ever since people witnessed her taking shelter in renowned coffee shops and fast-food restaurants for several years.

Dressed in a trench coat, Gwon was often seen praying, reading English newspapers, or writing her diary in English.

Contrasting to her destitute lifestyle, her intellectual background reveals she has graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, majoring in French language and literature. She has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 15 years, according to the SBS program “The Curious Story about You,” which was aired on the eve of Christmas.

Although she refuses to talk about her vagabond nature, the old lady expresses dignity towards her past and explains the reason why she has remained unmarried. “I saw no need to marry a man I was not interested in.”

She has lived upon 100,000 won, offered by a private welfare center, rejecting all other sources of assistance simply because she does not want to be treated like a beggar.

To many people’s astonishment, a psychologist has reported that her physical and mental conditions do not reveal any signs of possible health problems despite the lack of aid.

영자신문 읽는 노숙자 할머니 외교관 출신

`맥도날드 할머니`로 알려진 권하자(71)씨가 유명대학을 졸업하고 외무부 공무원까지 지낸 것으로 알려져 화제다.

권하자 할머니는 몇 년째 서울 도심 패스트푸드점과 유명 커피 전문점 등을 전전하며 쪽잠을 자면서 `맥도날드 할머니`로 불리며 알려지기 시작했다.

트렌치코트 차림의 할머니는 카페에서 기도하고 영자 신문을 읽거나 영어로 일기를 쓰기도 한다.

이 할머니의 정체는 지난 24일 방송된 SBS `당신이 궁금한 이야기`에서 밝혀졌는데, 한국외대 불어불문학과 59학번 출신에 외무부에서 15년을 근무한 경력의 인텔리였다.

할머니는 지금의 떠돌이 삶에 대해서는 함구했지만 "나름대로 자부심을 갖고 열심히 살았다"면서 "남자도 마음에 안 들면 노(NO)하고 결혼하기 싫은 사람과 결혼할 필요가 없다고 생각해 독신으로 살았다"고 말했다.

권 할머니의 생활비는 한 봉사단체에서 보내주는 10만원이 전부다. 서울시와 구세군이 돕겠다고 나섰지만 할머니는 노숙자로 취급받는 건 싫다며 끝내 사양했다.

누리꾼들은 "우리에게 많은 것을 생각하게 합니다. 선진국 문턱에 선 한국 사회의 그늘을 상징..안타까움의 대상" "국가에서 일하신 분인데도 그렇게 살아가시는데 일반 노인분들을 위한 복지도 형편없고.."등의 글로 안타까움을 나타냈다.

아울러 "이 추운 날 따뜻한 곳에서 좀 더 편안하게 지내시고 좋은 일자리도 가지셨으면 좋겠다는 생각도 들었지만 어쩜 이건 좀 아닐수도있지만...된장녀의 끝을 보는 게 아닌가 싶다" "외무부에서 오래 근무했으면 연금도 있을텐데.. 그것도 날렸을까요?" 등 다양한 의견들로 올라오고 있다.
