Kim Jong-un was a good guy in high school

Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and the country’s heir apparent, was a “normal guy” when he attended high school overseas, a classmate said in a report issued Wednesday.

The younger Kim, thought to be 27, was formalized as successor during the rare meeting of the Workers’ Party that opened Tuesday.

Still, he remains veiled in secrecy — no current image of him emerged from the meeting, as some analysts had predicted. It is widely believed that he attended school in Switzerland as a teenager.

In an interview with CNN, a former classmate who once considered Jong-un his best friend said he wasn’t very different from the other students at their school located outside of Bern.

“He was a normal guy like me,” interested in movies and computers, Joao Micaelo said. “He was competitive at sports. He didn’t like to lose, like any of us. For him, basketball was everything.”

Micaelo said his friend was known as “Pak Un” and was introduced to the class as the son of the ambassador of North Korea.

The two remained friends from 1998 to 2001 and spoke in English, though Jong-un also spoke German well, he said.

“He was very quiet and he didn’t speak with anyone. Maybe it was because most of the people did not take the time to understand him,” he said, adding that Jong-un was a “good guy.” Though Jong-un rarely spoke about North Korea, Micaelo carefully expressed hope that a Kim Jong-un regime could bode well for North Korea.

“I can just say what I know: Un, when he was 16, he was a good guy,” Micaelo said. “So, I don’t think he would do something bad. But I don’t know what he’s been like in the last nine years.”

Michaelo said he would like to see his old friend again, but that he didn’t know whether he would be willing to visit North Korea.

The report said local government officials in the town of the Liebefeld School confirmed that a student named Pak-un attended at the same time as Micaelo.

‘김정은, 지기 싫어하는 농구광’

북한의 유력한 권력 승계자인 김정은은 해외 고교 유학 중 “보통 아이”였다고 당시 급우가 수요일 말했다.

27세 가량으로 알려진 김정은은 화요일 수 십 년 만에 열린 노동당 회의에서 공식적으로 후계자가 되었다.

그럼에도 불구하고 그는 베일에 가려진 게 많다. 회의 후 사진도 나오지 않았다. 10대 시절 그는 스위스에서 학교에 다닌 것으로만 알려졌다.

CNN과의 인터뷰에서 정은을 스위스 시절 절친한 급우 한 사람이 베른 교외에 있는 학교 생활에서 정은씨는 다른 학생들과 아주 다르지 않았다고 말했다.

조아오 미카엘로는 “정은은 저처럼 평범한 아이였다”며 영화와 컴퓨터에 관심이 많았다고 말했다. 그는 또한 “스포츠를 잘했고 어느 사람과 마찬가지로 지기를 싫어했다”며 “그에게는 농구가 전부였다”고 덧붙였다.

그는 정은은 이름을 “박은”으로 부친이 북한 대사로 급우들에게 소개됐다고 상기했다.

이들 둘은 1998년부터 2001년까지 친구로 지냈으며 말은 영어로 했는데 독일어도 잘했다고 그는 기억을 되살렸다.

미카엘로는 “그는 매우 조용하고 아무하고나 이야기를 하지 않았다”며 “아마도 대부분 사람들이 그를 이해해주려 하지 않았기 때문인 것 같다”고 말했다. 그는 또한 정은이 “좋은 친구”였다고 덧붙였다.

북한에 대해 이야기를 거의 하지 않았지만 미카엘로는 김정은 정권이 북한에 좋은 조짐이 되기를 바란다고 조심스럽게 말했다.

미카엘로는 “제가 아는 것만 말할 수 있을 뿐입니다. 16세 때 그는 좋은 아이였다”며 “나쁜짓을 하리라고 생각하지는 않지만 지난 9년간 어떻게 변했는지는 저도 모릅니다”라고 말했다.

미카엘로는 그를 다시 보고 싶다며 북한을 방문 할 수 있을지는 알 수 없다고 말했다.

리베펠트고교가 있는 읍의 당국자들이 박은이라는 학생이 미카엘로와 같은 시기에 학교에 다녔음을 알려주었다고 CNN은 보도했다.
