North Korean leader names son as general

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, 68, was reappointed as secretary general of the North's ruling Workers’ Party at a convention of party representatives in Pyongyang on Tuesday, the (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

Kim was appointed as secretary general of the party in 1997. He is also chairman of the North Korean National Defense Commission.

The reappointment came a day after the North Korean leader named his youngest son as a four-star general, the communist state's official media said in its first mention of the young man widely seen as heir apparent.

The conference, the biggest ruling party meeting in 44 years, was expected to anoint the son, Jong-un, as eventual successor to the ailing leader.

It marks the first time that Jong-un's name has appeared in official media.

The KCNA also said the leader's sister Kim Kyong-hui was appointed a four-star general along with Choe Ryong-hae, a longtime aide to the Kim dynasty, AFP said.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell said in a conference call that Washington was ``watching developments carefully'' and was working to interpret the announcement's significance, according to AP.

Many delegates to the party meeting arrived in Pyongyang on Sunday by train and the city was festooned with flags and placards announcing the event, the reports said, citing footage shot by video news service APTN.

Kim suffered a stroke two years ago and since then has apparently speeded up plans to put his Swiss-educated third son -- believed aged about 27 -- in place as eventual ruler of the impoverished nuclear-armed nation.

In 1980, Kim Jong-il was confirmed as eventual successor to his father Kim Il-sung, who died in 1994.

北, 김정은에 `대장 칭호'

김정일 북한 국방위원장이 28일 평양에서 열린 노동당 대표자회에서 당 총비서로 재추대됐다고 조선중앙통신이 보도했다.

북한 노동당은 이날 44년 만에 소집한 제3차 당 대표자회에서 이같이 결정했다.

김 위원장은 지난 1997년 당 총비서직에 추대됐다.

이에 앞서 김정일 국방위원장이 후계자인 셋째 아들 김정은에게 인민군 대장 칭호를 부여했다고 조선중앙통신이 전했다.

중앙통신은 "김정일 동지께서 27일 인민군 지휘성원들의 군사칭호를 올려줄데 대한 명령 제0051호를 하달하셨다"면서 "명령에는 김경희, 김정은, 최룡해 등 6명에게 대장의 군사칭호를 올려준다고 지적되어 있다"고 밝혔다.

중앙통신은 그러나 대장 칭호를 받은 나머지 3명의 이름은 언급하지 않았다.

북한의 대외적인 공식 발표에 후계자 김정은의 이름이 들어간 것은 이번이 처음이며, 이는 김정은 후계구도의 공식화를 의미하는 것으로 보인다.

또 28일 열릴 것으로 예고된 제3차 노동당 대표자회에서 김정은이 당 정치국 상무위원이나 위원, 비서국 비서 같은 고위직에 오를 가능성이 높은 것으로 관측된다.

김정일 위원장이 김정은한테 첫 공식 직함으로 인민군 대장을 부여한 것은 `선군정치'를 계속 유지하면서 김정은의 군 장악력을 강화하려는 의도로 풀이된다.

아울러 김 위원장의 여동생인 김경희 당 경공업부장과, 장성택(김경희 남편) 국방위 부위원장의 측근으로 알려진 최룡해 전 황해북도 당 책임비서에게 인민군 대장 칭호를 부여한 것도 후계체제의 안정적 구축을 겨냥한 포석으로 분석된다.
