Sungkyunkwan at bottom in teacher-training

Listen

Sungkyunkwan University has ranked bottom among universities in Seoul for its teacher-training department.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced a list of 45 universities Friday, after grading their teacher colleges into three groups, according to the ratio of full-time professors, post-graduation employment rate and research achievements.

As a result, Sungkyunkwan and 10 other bottom-ranking universities will have to cut their student quota for their teacher-training departments next year. Eight universities, including Ewha Womans, Korea and Dongguk, ranked in the top group.

In the second group were 26 schools including Konkuk, Inha, Chonbuk National, Pusan National and Seoul National universities.

Among other universities that ranked at the bottom along with Sungkyunkwan were Kangnam, Kwandong, Seowon, Mokpo, Wonkwang and Jeonju.

These universities will be reviewed again in a year and will have to reduce their student quota by a further 20 percent should no improvement be made. In contrast, the top universities will have autonomy to manage their admission quota and be entitled to create more programs.
